University of Minnesota-Crookston - January 21st & 22nd, 2011
#8 Cort Bulloch receives this weeks Player of the Week accolades. Bulloch contributed six points over the weekend against the University of Minnesota – Crookston. Bulloch has played in more than 150 games for Iowa State and a collegiate career total of 89 points. Scoring a hat trick this weekend, Cort demonstrated to his teammates why he is Captain, working hard on and off the ice. This is Cort’s fourth and final season with the Cyclones. He is a senior in Finance at Iowa State and is on track to graduate this spring. Associate Head Coach, Brian Wierson, commented on Bulloch’s performance. "Cort's leadership is helping this group of players forge into a team and will be a great source of stability for the stretch run."
University of Illinois - January 14th & 15th, 2011
#1 Erik Hudson receives this weeks Player of the Week accolades for the second week in a row. Hudson has not let a puck past him in 193 consecutive minutes, resulting in three shutouts in a row and a weekend sweep over the University of Illinois. Erik stopped all 47 Illini shots this weekend and has stopped more than 70 shots in a row. Facing a total of 2,859 shots on goal during his career at Iowa State, Hudson has stopped 2,604 of them, giving him a career save percentage of 91. He has also played more than 6,200 minutes for the Cyclones in just over 105 games. Coach Murdoch commented on Erik’s performance. "Erik has great leadership on and off the ice. He has been playing exceptionally well and is seemingly invincible.”
On Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, Erik will be leaving Iowa to play for Team USA in the World University Games, which will take place in Erzurum, Turkey, Jan. 27 – Feb. 6, 2011. Erik’s weekend performance is a “huge springboard for him and Team USA” according to Iowa State Head Coach Al Murdoch. “Hudson can take wind out of sails. Not allowing a goal for 193 consecutive minutes is unprecedented.” Murdoch also stated. Murdoch will be the General Manager for Team USA as they head into Turkey.
Robert Morris University - January 7th & 8th, 2011
#1 Erik Hudson receives this weeks Player of the Week accolades for the second time in the 2010-11 season. Hudson delivered a shut-out performance during the second game of the Robert Morris series. Not only did Erik deliver a shut-out game against Robert Morris but he also stopped 59 of 61 shots on goal during the series giving him a weekend save percentage of 96.7. Erik has played in just over 20 games for the Cyclones this season and is leading the Central States Collegiate Hockey League in minutes played with 660. With two shut-outs and averaging only 2.87 goals per game, Erik has a season save percentage of 90.3. Before playing for Iowa State, Hudson laced up for the Burnaby Express of the BCHL. Hudson is originally from Spokane, Wash. and is currently a senior in business at Iowa State. Coach Murdoch commented further on Erik’s performance. "Erik is playing very hard and most importantly, very consistent. His consistency on the ice and in the class room is paying off, and Erik is playing some of his best hockey since he's been [at Iowa State]."

#27 Matt Cohn receives this weeks Player of the Week accolades for scoring a hat trick and helping the team to a 10-1 victory over the University of Iowa. Matt is an excellent all-around player, logging time at even strength, power play and penalty kill. With six total points for Iowa State, including two power play goals, one short-handed goal and a game winning goal, Matt’s ability to play in any situation is revealed through his stats. Not only is Cohn an excellent forward, but he also spent a game playing defense for the Cyclones, showing the diversity of his skills. This is Cohn’s first season with the Cyclones. Before playing for Iowa State, Matt played for the Chicago Force of the CSHL. At Iowa State, Matt has been reunited with a former line mate from the Force and meshes well with the team. Cohn hails from Hampshire, Ill. and is a junior majoring in Management at Iowa State. Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch considers “Matt a very coachable player and well respected by his team mates”. He also describes Matt as an “outstanding student in the classroom as well as a student of the game on the ice”.
Lindenwood University - December 3rd & 4th, 2010
#17 Marcus Malmsten is this week's Player of the Week for his hard-working positive attitude against Lindenwood University. Marcus has played 19 games for the Cyclones in his debut season with the team. Malmsten has contributed 9 points, six goals and three assists, including one power play and one game winning goal. Marcus is working very hard for the Cyclones and is a two-way player on the ice. Malmsten hails originally from Torslanda, Sweden, where he played for the HC TPS / J20 Elit. Marcus is currently a freshman majoring in business at Iowa State University. Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch is very satisfied with Malmsten’s performance. “Marcus is adapting well to life in America. He works hard and leaves it all on the ice. We would love to have more athletes like him at Iowa State.”

#26 Chris Cucullu recieves this weeks Player of the Week accolades for his unselfish play in this past weekend match ups. Cucullu had four points for the Cyclones over this past weekend at an away series in Canada. Averaging nearly one point per game with nine goals and 11 assists, Cucullu is one of the top point scorers for the Cyclones. Cucullu has transitioned very well with the Cyclones. With his unselfish playing tendencies, he complements his line extremely well. Cucullu is originally from Anchorage, Alaska. Before playing for Iowa State, Chris played for the Nelson Leafs of the KIJHL. Cucullu is currently a freshman in Kinesiology at Iowa State and is a diligent and hard working student. Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch was very contented with Cucullu’s performance. "Chris showed no fear and played with reckless abandon, especially against UBC on Friday night. His work ethic, both on the ice and in the class room, are what we are looking for in players who come to Iowa State."

#26 Brian Rooney is this weeks Player of the Week. Rooney’s consistent enthusiasm for the game helped earn him the title. Brian has played in 20 games for the Cyclones this season. He has a total of five goals and three assists, including one power play goal. Rooney contributes to all areas of the game. He logs time at even strength, power play and penalty kill. This is Rooney’s third season playing for the Cyclones. Before Rooney played for Iowa State, he played Juniors for the Chicago Force of the CSHL. Hailing from Palatine, Ill., Brian is currently a junior in Marketing at Iowa State. Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch was very pleased with Rooney’s performance. “Brian is working very hard and showing good leadership on and off the ice. He continues to bring much needed energy to the ice each and every shift and plays with reckless abandon!”

#5 Justin Wilkinson has received this weeks Playor of the Week honors for his consistent leadership throughout the season and for being an excellent role model for the younger players. Wilkinson is an excellent second year player for the Cyclones. This season Wilkinson has one goal and six assists. Justin sees the ice very well, and has the hockey smarts that are necessary to be a good defenseman. Before Wilkinson played for Iowa State, he played for the Kindersly Klippers of the SJHL. Hailing originally from Prince Ablert, Saskatchewan, Justin is currently a sophomore at Iowa State majoring in Civil Engineering. Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch is very pleased with Wilkinson’s performance. “Justin has great work effort in practice and at games. He is an excellent role model and is only a sophomore but is showing great leadership to new defensemen on the team.”

#11 Jake Flynn hails from Wenatchee, Washington which is also where he played junior hockey in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) for the Wenatchee Wild. Jake plays forward and is majoring in Computer Science. Over the 2 game series with Kent State, Jake scored one goal and recorded 4 assists moving him into 2nd, behind Mike Lebler on the scoring chart. For the season, Jake has 6 goals and 7 assists for 13 points. His +6 also ranks him 2nd on the squad for +/- rating.
Ohio University - October 29th & 30th, 2010
#9 Derek Kohles receives this award for his consistently good work ethic and positive attitude. Kohles had a penalty free weekend against the Ohio University Bobcats and recorded two assists. Derek is an excellent physical player and is fearless at full strength. This is his second season playing for the Cyclones. A native of Johnston, Iowa, Kohles played for the Dubuque Thunderbirds of the CSHL before his career with the Cyclones. Kohles is a sophomore majoring in Finance at Iowa State and does very well academically. Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch is consistently pleased with Derek’s performance. “Derek is a player who always has a smile on his face and works hard during practice and games. He is doing an excellent job helping the two freshmen on his line and always puts in his heart and soul on penalty kills.”

#22 Matt Rucinski receives this week Player of the Week honors for his performance over the weekend versus No. 10 ranked University of Illinois. Matt was credited with an assist in Friday night’s match up as well as the eventual game winner in Saturday’s contest. This season, matt has picked up three goals and six assists. He joins the Cyclones via the Rochester Ice Hawks of the Minnesota Junior Hockey league. Matt is majoring in computer science and hails from Arlington Heights, Illinois.Matt is contributing in all areas of the game, garnering ice time at full strength, power play, and penalty kill. His consistency is making him a valuable player on this year’s team. Head Coach, Al Murdoch commented on Rucinski, “He is playing very well on a line with senior co-captain, Mike Lebler and fellow freshman, Chris Cucullu. His ability to play both ends of the rink as well as contribute the way he is, is making him extremely valuable!"
Davenport University - October 15th & 16th, 2010
#21 Mike Lebler is this weeks Player of the Week for his offensive play. Lebler scored three goals, including one short-handed goal, in the series against Davenport University.Mike is an excellent all-around offensive player. He is a proven playmaker and goal scorer. This season, Lebler has scored six goals and five assists in the 10 games played. This is Mike’s fourth season with the Cyclone’s, and he is currently one of three assistant captains.Originating from Penticton, British Columbia, Lebler played for the Nelson Leafs in the KIJHL before his career at Iowa State. Mike is currently a senior in Construction Engineering and is an exceptional student.Head Coach Dr. Alan Murdoch is very satisfied with Lebler’s performance this season. “Lebler is an assistant captain who quietly leads by example. He performs very well on special teams and is a great all-around player.”
Arizona State University - October 8th & 9th, 2010
#16 James Werner is this weeks PLayer of the week for showing outstanding performance and scoring the Cyclones' ony two goals in the series against Arizona State University. Werner is one of the top freshman on this year’s team. In this weekend’s match-up against the Sun Devils, Werner continued to skate around his opponents despite being cut by a skate blade earlier in the game showing true dedication to Cyclone Hockey. This season, Werner has scored four goals and one assist in the seven games he has played.Hailing originally from Orillia, Ontario, Werner played for the Fernie Ghostriders from the KIJHL before making his debut at Iowa State. Werner was one of five players to represent Iowa State at the World University Games tryouts in August. He was the only freshman from Iowa State to try out and showed true potential. Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch had a lot to say about Werner’s performance on and off the ice. “Werner exemplifies the kind of player we look for in incoming freshman. He plays with a lot of heart and focuses a lot on school not just hockey. James also showed very well at the World University Games tryouts, and we are glad to have him as a part of Cyclone Hockey.”

#20 Jordan Pascale receives this weeks honors of Player of the Week for his consistent hard work on and off the ice.Pascale had one goal and two assists against Oklahoma.Pascale has played in all six of the Cyclones games this season. With an assist and goal against the University of Oklahoma, Jordan’s season point total is one goal and three assists. This is Jordan’s fourth season with the Cyclones, and he is a superior leader. He is always the first to practice and last to leave.An Aurora, Col. native, Pascale came to the Cyclones from the Dubuque Thunderbirds of the CSHL. Pascale is a senior in Mechanical Engineering and is an exceptional student. Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch is very impressed by Jordan’s hard work. “Jordan is making his senior year the best year of his career at Iowa State. He is a good quiet leader on and off of the Ice and works extremely hard to excel not only at hockey but also at life.”
University of Central Oklahoma - September 24th & 25th, 2010
#1 Erik Hudson is this weeks Player of the Week after receiving his first shut-out of the season against University of Central Oklahoma. Erik sat during the Cyclones’ opening weekend due to an injury, but his return to the ice was outstanding. With a total of 57 out of 60 saves for the series against the University of Central Oklahoma, Erik’s save percentage is 95. Erik has been an excellent goaltender during his career at Iowa State. This is his fourth season playing for the Cyclones.Before Hudson played for Iowa State, he played Juniors for the Burnaby Express of the BCHL. Hailing from Spokane, Was., Erik is currently a senior in business at Iowa State University and has excellent academics.Head Coach Dr. Al Murdoch was very pleased with Hudson’s performance. “Erik plays like we expect our seniors to play. He was able to make hard saves look easy and showed great leadership right down to the end.”
St. Cloud State University - September 17th & 18th, 2010
#8 Cort Bulloch receives this weeks Player of the Week honors after contributing three assists in the Cyclones' 7-1 victory over the Huskies. After three outstanding seasons as an Assistant Captain for the Cyclones, Bulloch made his head captain debut against the St. Cloud Huskies this past weekend. Bulloch has been a standout player during his three seasons at Iowa State, contributing 10 goals and 11 assists for a total of 21 points last season. With his bone crushing checking and impeccable skating abilities, Bulloch is predicted to have another stellar season with the Cyclones. Prior to donning the cardinal and gold, Bulloch played Juniors for the Notre Dame Hounds of the SJHL. This Fort Wayne, Ind. native is a top student at Iowa State University, majoring in finance. "Cort has stepped into the Captains position smoothly by quietly leading by example. He is an excellent student in his senior year in business - finance. He is one of the top players on and off the ice with an outstanding, tireless work ethic." head coach Dr. Alan Murdoch stated about the Cyclone Hockey captain.
