The last few weeks have been UNBELIEVABLE! We finished off a season sweep of in-state rival Iowa and took #1 ranked and undefeated Illinois to two overtime games. The good news is we played some real good hockey. The bad news is they escaped both games with 3-2 overtime wins against us. This last weekend, we split a series with the University of St. Thomas from Minnesota. In doing so, we got to see all of our Cyclones in the line-up and get a good amount of playing time.
We have finished up league play in the CSCHL and we are entering the stretch run. Our current focus is the CSCHL Tournament in Champaign, Illinois. We will be leaving tonight for a 10:00 am game tomorrow vs. Kent State, who swept us in mid November at their place. We will look to avenge those losses and move on to the 2nd round of the tournament on Saturday.
After this weekend, we will have one last home series vs. a stout Minot State team on February 22 & 23. They have been playing good competition and will give us an excellent series before we head off for Rochester, NY for the ACHA National Tournament, March 1-5. The last home series should bring the fans out and they will be hanging from the rafters, WOO!
We, at Cyclone Hockey, appreciate all of your support this season and we will look to make you proud as we enter the stretch run! It’s gonna be UNBELIEVABLE!

This past weekend, Iowa State earned a much needed sweep of CSCHL rival Michigan – Dearborn. The two wins moved the Cyclones into 2nd place in the league standings with only Lindenwood ahead of them.
Saturday’s game saw many scorers for the Cyclones in their 9-4 victory. Mike Lebler, Bill Adolph and Josh Rahme all had two goals and Brian Spring, Pete Majkozak and Mike Murtaugh chipped in with one apiece. Christian Johansson and Jim Stenson split time in between the pipes with Johannson allowing 3 and Stenson 1, respectively.
Michigan – Dearborn came back Sunday looking for the split and jumped all over the Cylones going up 2 -0 early in the first. Cort Bulloch answered back for the Cyclones with 2 goals of his own to make it 2-2 after one period of play. Iowa State outscored Dearborn 3-1 in the second with goals coming from Brian Spring, Pete Majkozak and Matt Verdoni taking a 5-3 lead into the third period. Verdoni’s goal would be the eventual game winner as Dearborn scored one in the third and frantically tried to score one more for the overtime session. But all attempts were turned aside from net minder Johansson as Iowa State skated away with the 5-4 win and the series sweep.
The Cyclones are on a 6 game winning streak as the Sooners of Oklahoma come to town this weekend. “It’s gonna be Unbelievable,” exclaimed Coach Murdoch when asked about the upcoming series. Oklahoma is currently ranked 6th and Iowa State 12th. With the home – ice advantage, the Cyclones will look to make the jump into the top 10 for the first time this season.
Q & A with Coach Murdoch:
Q: What will Oklahoma bring to the ice this weekend?
A: Oklahoma brings in a very much deserved #6 ranking and they will be looking for the sweep on our ice. They will be fast, they will be physical and they will be hungry. They are a young program, but they have proven they can go on the road and play tough and beat teams.
Q: What do you feel the difference may be for this series?
A: Special teams have proven to be the difference in many games throughout the country this season. I do not feel this weekend will be much different. Our penalty kill will need to be ready for their power play and our power play must capitalize on some opportunities when we get them. When it comes to 5 on 5, our players will need to rise to the challenge of playing the #6 team in the country.
Q: What is your opinion about the Cyclones current 6 game winning streak?
A: We try not to put too much emphasis on streaks. We try to focus on taking each opponent as they come, one game at a time, one period at a time, one shift at a time. If we put together some streaks, that’s great, but that is not our emphasis.
Q: What about the Cyclones unbeaten record at home this year?
A: That is something we emphasize, playing well at home and winning games. We feel our home crowd is one of the best in the country and when opposing teams come to town, we want them to feel our crowd. We like our fans to be hanging from the rafters and we’re sure to see that this weekend.
